In 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy blasted its way onto cinema screens. The sci-fi adventure movie, from director James Gunn, introduced the world to a collection of Marvel Comics’ lesser-known characters, and instantly launched them into the stratosphere.
Mixing a playful tone, plenty of comedy, some excellent performances, and lots of spectacle, Guardians of the Galaxy was a big hit for Marvel Studios. As such, the film cemented the Guardians’ place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and guaranteed that a series of sequels and spin-off appearances would follow.
And follow they did, not only did the Guardians’ resurface in a couple of sequels, they also popped up in Avengers movies, a Thor film, and a Christmas-themed holiday special. All of these features were linked, with the characters moving from one adventure to the next.

The Guardians of the Galaxy movies and the I Am Groot shorts in order
In addition to the movies listed above, the character Groot has also featured in a collection of animated shorts, produced exclusively for Disney+. The shorts – which all appear under the banner heading of I Am Groot – run around three-and-half-minutes in length, and are set between the events of Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2.
The shorts are largely throw-away things and are not essential viewing. However, should you wish to integrate the I Am Groot shorts into the film timeline, then follow this list:
