Hallmark teases new Hannah Swensen Mystery movie for 2023

If you’re a fan of Hallmark mystery movies, and you happen to follow Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on Twitter, then last night you will have seen a curious little Tweet, teasing the return of an old favourite, with the arrival of a new movie. The Tweet was kept deliberately vague, in order to keep followers guessing, but it provided a few clues as to what movie was being teased. 

The Tweet in question read as follows: “#Sluethers We’ve got all the ingredients lined up for a delicious new mystery when old friends return. All you need to do is guess the clue from the image!”

Now, the image included in the Tweet showed three silhouettes, disguising the faces of the actors involved in the movie – which kept the mystery going. However, the text in the Tweet contained a number of important clues, which gave the game away.

The words ‘ingredient’ and ‘delicious’ suggested this mystery movie was food related, while the inclusion of a cake emoji, which hinted at baking, pretty much sealed the deal. Yes, if you haven’t already guessed it, the Tweet refers to the arrival of a new Hannah Swensen/Murder, She Baked movie!

Fans have been calling for this popular film series to return for a while now and Hallmark has listened to those requests. This Tweet is Hallmark’s initial response, and the next instalment will be arriving shortly.

The new movie is called Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery (2023). According to ACFC West, the film is currently in production in British Columbia, Canada, through CPM2 Productions Inc.

Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery entered pre-production in late January 2023, with filming beginning on February 17th. The movie is currently set to wrap in a couple of weeks on March 10th.

Few details are available at present, so there is no official word from Hallmark as to when this new Hannah Swensen Mystery movie will debut. However, with Hallmark movies having a quick turnaround time, it is very likely to appear on screens later this year, via Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

Pat Williams is directing Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery, while Dave Pelletier is the director of photography on the project. Shawn Williamson and Jamie Goehring are executive producers, while Kevin Leslie is the producer.

When it airs, Carrot Cake Murder: A Hannah Swensen Mystery will be the seventh entry in the Hannah Swensen collection. The film picks up the story after the sixth instalment, Sweet Revenge: A Hannah Swensen Mystery, which aired in 2021.

As fans will be aware, the series began in 2015 under the banner title, ‘Murder, She Baked’, with Alison Sweeney taking on the lead role of Swensen, a baker turned sleuth. The banner title then switched to ‘A Hannah Swensen Mystery’ in 2021, as part of Hallmark’s plans to freshen up the film series. 

Sweeney is expected to return for this latest chapter in the series. No casting details have been announced just yet.

This new movie, and all of the other entries in the Murder, She Baked/Hannah Swensen series are based around a collection of mystery novels by Joanne Fluke. To date, and including collections and omnibuses, there are over 30 books in Fluke’s series.
