In 2010, the BBC broadcast the British psychological crime thriller, Luther. The television show – created by Neil Cross – starred Idris Elba as titular character, DCI John Luther, and followed his story as he investigated various police cases.

When Luther made its debut on BBC One, the six-episode show was a big hit with UK audiences. The critical response to the series was also very positive, and this ensured that a second season was quickly commissioned.

Season two of Luther began airing in 2011, and this time comprised four episodes. Once again, the show continued to prove popular, and was soon followed by a third season (another four episodes) in 2013, and a fourth season (just two episodes this time) in 2015.

A fifth and final season of Luther aired in 2019. This season comprised four episodes, and effectively brought Luther’s TV adventures to an end.

In total, five seasons of Luther were broadcast between 2010 and 2019, clocking up 20 episodes in the process. However, while the TV series did conclude, this wasn’t the end of the Luther story.

In 2023, Netflix revived the show via the feature-length movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun. The movie was given a theatrical release date of February 24th, with a streaming release date of March 10th.
