In 2005, British sci-fi series, Doctor Who aired ‘The Christmas Invasion’ – a Christmas-themed episode of the popular fantasy series. The episode which starred David Tennant in the role of the Doctor, was broadcast on Christmas Day in the UK, on BBC One.

Due to the popularity of the episode (almost 9.8 million viewers tuning in on the day), The Christmas Invasion was deemed a huge ratings success for the BBC. As such, another Christmas special was commissioned for the following year (The Runaway Bride), which once again aired on Christmas Day to big ratings.

With the specials proving to be a hit, and Doctor Who being loved by British audiences, the BBC continued airing new specials for the next year and the subsequent years that followed. To begin with, the episodes aired on Christmas Day, but over time the BBC shifted them around the festive season, with some airing on New Year’s Day.

But if you’re new to Doctor Who, and would like to dive into the Christmas/New Year’s episodes of the show, what are the stories you need to look out for? Well, for all the timey-wimey details and more, keep on reading!
