Well, here’s a nice bit of welcome news: The Batman is coming to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced (via Collider) that the 2004 animated show will be getting the HD home video treatment in early 2022.

In a press release, Warner Bros. Home Video said:

The Batman: The Complete Series follows 20-something-year-old Bruce Wayne’s early adventures as he balances his daytime persona as a bachelor billionaire with his night-time guise as a caped crimefighter. Along the way, Batman is joined by allies Robin and Batgirl as they combat Gotham City’s Rogues’ Gallery, including updated versions of his familiar foes as well as a bevy of rarely seen villains like Killer Moth and The Everywhere Man.

“Join one of the most complex and intriguing characters in comic book history for action-packed super heroic adventures that test the limits of this legendary character’s extraordinary physical prowess and super-sleuthing skills.”

The boxset will include all 65 episodes of the show, in one neat little package, along with a collection of bonus features. The bonus features include:

  • The Dark Dynasty Continues – Featurette
  • Joining Forces: The Batman’s Legendary Team-Ups – Featurette
  • The Batman Junior Detective Challenge – Quiz
  • The Batman Junior Detective Exam: Level 2 – Quiz
  • Building Batman – Featurette
  • Gotham PD Case Files – Featurette
  • New Look, New Direction, New Knight – Featurette
  • The Batman: Season 3 Unmasked – Featurette
  • The Batman: Season 4 Unmasked – Featurette

The only thing missing from the boxset is the 2005 direct-to-video movie, The Batman vs. Dracula, which is noticeably absent. However, the opportunity to have all 65 episodes/five seasons of The Batman on Blu-ray is one not to be passed up.

While The Batman never quite hit the same heights of popularity as its predecessor, Batman: The Animated Series, the show certainly had its moments. Along with the usual Bat-villains, such as The Joker, Penguin, and Catwoman, The Batman dug deep to include a few of the more obscure characters and this made for a fun little series.

The show also featured plenty of allies too, with Batgirl becoming a semi-regular character from Season Three and Robin being introduced in Season Four. A number of members of the Justice League (Superman, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter etc) also dropped by for guest roles towards the end of the show’s run.

Should you want to own The Batman: The Complete Series on Blu-ray, the boxset will be available in the US and Canada from 1st February 2022.

No word yet on a UK release, but let’s remain forever hopeful. Other DC animated shows, such as Batman: The Animated Series and Superman: The Animated Series have received releases over on this side of the pond, so it’s likely this one will follow suit.
