*WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST INCLUDES A DISCUSSION OF MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE REVELATION PART ONE. AS SUCH, THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE SHOW WHICH YOU MAY WISH TO AVOID IF YOU ARE STILL PLAYING CATCH-UP.*
Masters of the Universe returned to television screens last weekend with the arrival of the new Netflix show, Masters of the Universe Revelation. The series – overseen by showrunner Kevin Smith – brought He-Man, Skeletor, and many classic characters back to the small screen for a brand-new story, in what turned out to be a colourful, imaginative, and surprising adventure.
Conceived as a loose sequel to the 1983 cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Revelation used the original show as its starting off point, before building something a little different. In this show, He-Man is taken out of the limelight to allow other characters to shine, and in his absence the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.
So far, Netflix has aired Part One of Revelation, which comprises the first five episodes. Part Two is set to air later this year, and should resolve a very significant cliff-hanger from these opening instalments.
But what can we expect from Part Two? More characters? More surprises? Perhaps more He-Man?
The team behind Revelation have remained fairly tight-lipped about what is on the horizon in Part Two, but a few bits of information have slipped out. Based on what has been said, as well as what has already been hinted at, I am serving up five things to expect from Masters of the Universe Revelation Part Two!
Skele-God: Master of the Universe
Let’s kick things off with the conclusion of Part One. The show ended on a jaw-dropping moment, which will continue to be significant moving forward.
In the final moments of episode five, Prince Adam raises his Power Sword into the air in order to transform into He-Man. But before Adam can finish reciting the words he uses to change into the most powerful man in the universe, Skeletor stabs him, takes the Power Sword, and transforms himself into a god.
The moment proved to be pretty shocking and left Part One on a cliff-hanger ending. And it’s an ending that is unlikely to be resolved straight away.
In the original 1983 series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, He-Man always defeated Skeletor and saved the day. With Revelation, the creative team behind the series is taking the opportunity to shake things up, so don’t expect a quick resolution.
Skeletor is now a god and becomes THE Master of the Universe. His transformation into an omnipotent being is something which is likely to play out across the course of Part Two, with audiences finally seeing what happens when Skeletor gets the power.
Although audiences saw Adam stabbed by Skeletor in the final episode of Part One, this is not the end of Prince Adam or He-Man. In short: Neither He-Man nor Adam are dead.
Adam’s ‘death’ in episode five, as well as He-Man’s ‘death’ in episode one were purely storytelling devices to help open up the narrative. And if you want further confirmation, take it from someone who knows – He-Man/Prince Adam voice actor, Chris Wood who said: “Adam’s not dead; he’s very wounded.”
Speaking to Variety, Wood explained that Adam is very much alive, and that ‘killing’ both Adam and He-Man was simply a way to move the story forward. Temporarily taking these characters out of the game, has forced other heroes to step up and the end result has been a whole new story.
Wood said: “If you want to light the whole world on fire, in terms of destroying a fandom, you’d take He-Man out and be like, ‘That’s it, he’s gone, bye!’ Now what (the writers have) done is they’ve found really interesting ways to turn the dynamics of the show on its head and raise the stakes to a point that the original never saw.”
Prince Adam, once more?
A number of fans were upset with the direction of MOTU Revelation Part One, because the focus shifted away from He-Man in favour of other characters. Well, from the sounds of things, Part Two will swing back round to He-Man, with an exploration of Prince Adam.
Speaking to Variety, Rob David, Vice President of Content Creative at Mattel Television, said: “A lot of Part 2 is a world in which Skeletor has the power — then we get to say, ‘Well, what made Adam special?’”
He added: “‘What does it mean to have the power? What made Adam the person who was most worthy to be He-Man?’ I will tell you this: Adam’s story is not done and will never be done. Not saying what happens to him, but I’m just saying the story continues.”
Based on David’s comments, it would appear this exploration of Adam’s character will tap into a leftover story thread from the 1983 cartoon. In the episode ‘Prince Adam No More’, Adam finds himself playing second fiddle to He-Man, leaving him feeling overshadowed by the big guy. It looks as if we will see this idea revisited in Revelation.
One of the stand-out characters of Masters of the Universe Revelation Part One was Evil-Lyn. Throughout the first five episodes of the series, Skeletor’s right-hand gal was given plenty of screen time and she didn’t waste a moment.
But Evil-Lyn wasn’t just on hand to carry out Skeletor’s demands, she became an interesting character in her own right – even switching sides to join forces with the heroes of the show. However, her alliance with Teela and Co. was brief, and eventually she lived up to her name by returning to the dark side during the final moments of episode five.
Will she remain evil? It’s unclear, but what is clear is there is still a lot more to come from Evil-Lyn.
Speaking on the Netflix after-series special, Masters of the Universe Revelation: Revelations (Part 1), Kevin Smith, said: “I would say that if people think they know Evil-Lyn, you know now, wait until you see Part Two.”
Smith’s comment suggests that not only will Evil-Lyn return, but she will remain a significant character in the series. Could she return to the side of the good guys? It’s entirely possible.
Teela: Warrior Sorceress?
And finally, alongside Evil-Lyn, the other stand-out character of Masters of the Universe Revelation Part One was Teela. She became the driving force of the first five episodes – and going into Part Two, audiences should expect Teela to remain a key player.
Part One of the series focused on Teela’s growth from the original series to Revelation. It also dealt with her feelings of betrayal, after discovering that a number of her friends knew Prince Adam was He-Man, yet decided not to let her in on the secret.
But this isn’t the only secret being kept from Teela, and moving into Part Two she is likely to uncover the truth about her mother. For those who are unaware, Teela is the daughter of the Sorceress – something which was highlighted in ‘Teela’s Quest’, an episode of the 1983 series.
The truth about the Sorceress was hidden from Teela in the original show, but Part One makes various hints that the secret is soon to be revealed. The question is, does Teela already know?
Thank you for taking the time to read this post about Masters of the Universe Revelation on It’s A Stampede!. Masters of the Universe Revelation Part One was a heck of a lot of fun, and Part Two has the potential to offer more of the same… and then some!
In addition to the five things above, it’s quite possible fans will see more classic characters brought to the screen, as well as a lot more surprises. I don’t know about you, but I for one can’t wait!
