Bad news if you are a fan of Hallmark’s Good Witch television show, as it has been confirmed that Good Witch has been cancelled.
According to Deadline, Good Witch will come to an end in 2021, concluding the show’s seven season run. The series will bow out with the 75th episode, ‘The Wedding’, which will hit screens on July 25th.
Good Witch stars Catherine Bell as Cassie Nightingale, alongside James Denton, Bailee Madison, Catherine Disher, Peter MacNeill, Kylee Evans, and Sarah Power. The show is a spin-off of The Good Witch movie series which began in 2008.
Speaking about the cancellation of the show, Randy Pope, SVP Programming and Development for Hallmark said: “We thank our leads whose chemistry and talent made Good Witch such a beloved and uniquely special viewing experience: Catherine Bell, who has brought the inimitable Cassie Nightingale to life for 13 years, and James Denton, who as Dr. Sam Radford has added so much charm and humour to the series.
“We also extend our gratitude and thanks to the entire cast and crew for their dedication and hard work.”
Taking to Instagram to express her feelings about the cancellation of the show, Good Witch star Catherine Bell, said:
“I am so grateful for 7 seasons… and 13 years (of movies) of being a part of Good Witch, working with the KINDEST and most talented, cast & crew, producers, network! It has always felt like family.
“Cassie Nightingale… a woman who is always positive, inspiring and uplifting. Someone who brings out the best in everyone she meets, makes life better for everyone around, and always sees the glass half FULL. She has inspired me to be a better person, to be kinder, gentler, more loving and accepting.
“I know that many of you have felt the same. I feel so fortunate. I know we will all miss the Good Witch and all the amazing characters and stories. But I am definitely smiling because it happened. With love, respect and so much gratitude, CB.”
Bell began her statement with a Dr. Seuss quote that simply read: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
Bell’s co-star, James Denton, echoed these words with his own feelings on the show’s cancellation. In a statement, via Deadline, he expressed his delight to have been a part of Good Witch and his appreciation for the passion shown from fans.
He said: “It would be unseemly to complain about your show being cancelled after seven seasons, and I won’t. I’ve been very fortunate to have been on other long-running series, but Good Witch was special.
“The fans were so devoted to the show and I’m disappointed for them, but I hope they know how much the actors appreciated their vocal support. The cast was the nicest collection of wildly talented people I’ve ever been around.
“The producers treated us extremely well, and I’m happy to still have two movies to make with the network so I’m not saying goodbye to the Hallmark audience yet.”
So, with the show coming to an end, the question on most fans’ lips right now is, will there be another Good Witch movie? This might seem like the logical step, to transform the series back into a collection of standalone movies, but the simple answer is ‘no’.
At present, there are no plans for any future Good Witch movies. The final episode of the series is set to provide the conclusion to both the movies and the show, bringing an end to 13 years of Good Witch tales.
This is arguably not the news that Good Witch fans want to hear, but having a 13-year run of movies and a television series is very impressive, and leaves the Good Witch mythology with a lasting legacy. And don’t forget, there are plenty of stories to revisit, so the opportunity to dive back into this little universe never has to end.
There is also a silver lining – the stars of Good Witch will be appearing on screens via other Hallmark movies and shows, so fans can still keep up to date with their favourite actors. As noted by James Denton, he is currently contracted to shoot two more movies for Hallmark, and the network is also keen to work with other Good Witch actors on future movies and shows.
A spokesperson for Hallmark said: “Catherine Bell, James Denton, and Katherine Barrell, among others, are members of the Hallmark Channel family, and we are in discussions on future projects.”
So, unless Hallmark changes its mind, or decides to revive Good Witch in the future, this is the end of the road for Cassie Nightingale – but what an enchanting road it has been. And if you are not quite ready to say goodbye, below you will find a list of all the Good Witch movies and episodes to guide you back through the series.
