In 1977, Marvel Comics published What If? – an imaginative anthology series which told alternate universe stories. The comics took existing characters and established milestones in the Marvel mythology (e.g. The Death of Uncle Ben) and turned them upside down to create stories such as What if Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben had lived?.
This initial volume of What If? comics (later dubbed ‘Volume 1’) ran for 47 issues before coming to an end in 1984 with the tale: What if Loki had found the hammer of Thor?. During its run, What If? Vol 1. covered a wealth of ideas and adventures, revolving around characters such as the X-Men, Daredevil, Nick Fury, and Conan the Barbarian, amongst others.
If you have never read a What If? comic, but are keen to know what stories were featured during the original run, then you will find this post very handy. This post contains a list of all the titles from What If? Vol 1., as well as the title of a one-off ‘special’ published in 1988.
