Explaining Diagnosis: Murder

Before it became a long-running television series, Diagnosis: Murder started life as an episode of the American crime drama, Jake and the Fatman. The fourth season episode, ‘It Never Entered My Mind’, featured the character, Dr. Mark Sloan, and acted as backdoor pilot for a potential movie or series.
The backdoor pilot worked, and with Sloan proving popular, the character next appeared in a trio of television movies which aired between 1992 and 1993. The movies included: Diagnosis of Murder (1992), The House on Sycamore Street (1992), and A Twist of the Knife (1993).
The television movies were a ratings winner, and this convinced CBS to greenlight a television series, aka Diagnosis: Murder. The first episode aired in October 1993 and ran continuously for eight seasons.
During its run, Diagnosis: Murder clocked up 178 episodes, with the final episode airing in May 2001; however, this wasn’t quite the end for Dr. Sloan. The show was revived and concluded the following year, with two further television movies: Town Without Pity (2002) and Without Warning (2002).
