When is a movie trailer, not a movie trailer? When it’s a tourism ad of course!
Cast your mind back to early 2018, and you might remember a number of stories suggesting a new ‘Crocodile’ Dundee movie was on the horizon. Fans of the Australian action series got very excited about the prospect of a new film, and it seemed as if a trailer was imminent.
And a ‘Crocodile’ Dundee trailer did drop in February 2018….
…only it wasn’t actually a movie trailer. Instead, it was a tourism commercial, masquerading as a movie trailer.
You see, the legacy of Mick ‘Crocodile’ Dundee was being resurrected, but to promote trips to Australia, and not to highlight the release of a new film. The faux trailer aired during the Super Bowl and focused on Brian Dundee as played by Danny McBride, along with his tour guide, played by Chris Hemsworth.
The trailer/commercial was designed to play on the nostalgic charm of the ‘Crocodile’ Dundee series, and featured a number of nods to the original movie. It also offered up some beautiful shots of Australia.
McBride and Hemsworth were the main stars of the fake trailer, but original ‘Crocodile’ Dundee star, Paul Hogan did put in a (very) brief appearance.
Was this faux trailer a blow to fans?
But with a set of ‘Crocodile’ Dundee films already available for fans to watch at their leisure, they soon got over it. Plus, it was a fun way to highlight tourism to the land down under.
