The Chronicles of Narnia is an extremely popular series of novels. The series began in 1950 with the publication of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – arguably the most famous of the books – and continued with a number of sequels, an equal, and a prequel.

But how many Narnia books are there?

The Narnia books were not published in timeline order. As such, there are two different orders for the series.

The first order is the published order:

  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
  • Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
  • The Silver Chair (1953)
  • The Horse and his Boy (1954)
  • The Magician’s Nephew (1955)
  • The Final Battle (1956)

The second order is the timeline order. Before I set out this order, let me provide a quick explanation.

  • The first four books, The Lion, the and the Wardrobe, through to (and including) The Silver Chair are in chronological order.
  • The Horse and his Boy is set during the events of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
  • The events of The Magician’s Nephew take place at the very beginning of the timeline, long before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
  • The Final Battle takes place at the very end of the timeline, after the events of the previous six stories.

The timeline order for the Narnia books is as follows:

  • The Magician’s Nephew (1955)
  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
  • The Horse and his Boy (1954)
  • Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (1951)
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
  • The Silver Chair (1953)
  • The Final Battle (1956)

But which is the best order – publication order or timeline order?

This has been the subject of much debate for years, with strong arguments for each order.

I would suggest reading the books in the order they were published… but ultimately the choice is yours.
