To date, there have been six movies featuring the iconic aliens known as Predators, starting with 1987’s Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring, Predator and running through to… sigh… 2018’s The Predator. But which Predator movies are worthy of your time and which are simply GOSH DARN AWFUL?
Today I thought it would be good to take a look at the past success of the Predator movie franchise – both financially and critically. Utilising information gleamed from both Box Office Mojo and Rotten Tomatoes I’ve presented the rankings below.
Will you agree with the rankings? Will you be surprised? You’ll have to read on…
Here are the box office rankings according to Box Office Mojo:
- Alien Vs. Predator (2004) – $172,544,654
- The Predator (2018) – $160,542,134
- Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) – $128,884,494
- Predators (2010) – $127,233,108
- Predator (1987) – $98,267,558
- Predator 2 (1990) – $57,120,318
As you can see from the list, financially the most successful movie of the series is Alien Vs. Predator – the first team-up between the Alien and Predator franchises. The least successful entry is Predator 2.
Does this surprise you?
For me, I kind of expected this, however I’m surprised that Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem achieved as much financial success as it did. While there are things in that movie that work better than they do in the first AVP film, the whole way the movie is shot is frustrating beyond belief.
Seriously, never try to watch this movie with the lights on – you’ll never see a thing!
So, that’s how well the movies did financially, now let’s look at the critical response to the series, to see if it matches up.
Here’s the critical rankings according to Rotten Tomatoes:
- Predator (1987) – 81%
- Predators (2010) – 65%
- The Predator (2018) – 32%
- Predator 2 (1990) – 29%
- Alien Vs. Predator (2004) – 21%
- Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) – 12%
OK, so there’s a big change around in this list, demonstrating that there is somewhat of a divide when it comes to money and… er… quality.
The original Predator ranks highest with 81%, while (not surprisingly) Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem is at the bottom with a measly 12%. Predator 2 fairs better this time, taking the midpoint, but even then it is only with a rating of 29% – not particularly amazing is it?
So, do you think Rotten Tomatoes provides a fairly accurate representation of the movies or are the RT rankings way off?
Here is how I would rank the Predator movies:
- Predator (1987)
- Predators (2010)
- Predator 2 (1990)
- The Predator (2018)
- Alien Vs. Predator (2004)
- Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
My rankings are pretty similar to Rotten Tomatoes, although I must say that I honestly believe only Predator is a truly great movie – the rest are pretty subpar. But what do you think?
Head to the comments section and rank the films how you see fit. Tell me the best and worst films in the series.
