In 1995, TriStar Pictures rolled the dice on action-adventure movie, Jumanji. The film – which starred Robin Williams in the lead role – told the story of a boy who gets trapped inside of a jungle board game.
Jumanji was a big hit at the box office and quickly became a family favourite. The movie also led to a series of spin-offs and sequels.
But did you know that the movie also inspired a real game?
Yep, if you have ever wondered if Jumanji is a real game, then wonder no more – it is!
Is Jumanji based on a real game?
Jumanji is not based on a game; it is based on a picture book by Chris Van Allsburg. However, the movie did inspire a game, which hit toy shelves in the 1990s to coincide with the release of the movie.
The game – appropriately titled Jumanji: The Game – took design elements from the movie, but was more simplistic in approach. Instead of a carved wooden box, the game utilised a standard gaming board, and instead of a real-life jungle setting, well, let’s say that players had to use their imaginations a lot more.
The description of Jumanji: The Game read as follows:
‘Danger lurks at every turn and on every turn, as you embark upon this epic adventure. Decode the secret rhyming messages, then race against time to roll the dice that can save you and your fellow players from the vicious croc’s snapping jaws, the stealthy lion’s ferocious bite or the charge of the trumpeting elephants.
‘Double-cross your opponents by strategically placing the rampaging rhino to block the path as you scurry towards the centre of the board. Venture into the world of Jumanji if you dare, but be warned, you may not be able to escape the jungle’s clutches.’
How do you play Jumanji: The Game?
Players take it in turns to roll a die, in order to move their coloured pawns through an imaginary jungle. The number that appears on the die determines how many moves the player can take.
During a move, if a player lands on a rhino space they can choose to block another player. Players who land on a space which features the phrase ‘wait for 5 or 8’, must wait until another player rolls a 5 or an 8.
If players land on a blank space they must draw a Jumanji danger card. This card contains a hidden message, which can only be revealed by using the card decoder which is situated in the centre of the board.
The danger cards can determine whether players move forward or back and can also play a part in whether players win or lose the game. The object of the game is to reach the centre of the board and shout “Jumanji”.
How many people can play the game?
Jumanji: The Game is designed for 2-4 players. The game is recommended for people who are aged 6 and up.
What is included in the Jumanji game?
The contents of the game include:
