This year, two X-Men movies are due to hit cinema screens: X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. Both movies are being released by 20th Century Fox and both were originally due out in 2018.

The first – X-Men: Dark Phoenix – is scheduled to hit cinema screens in June and unless it is rescheduled again (Dark Phoenix has been rescheduled twice previously), it should hit its release date. But what about The New Mutants?

The New Mutants was originally set for release in April 2018, but was pushed back to February 2019 to allow for re-shoots to take place. The movie was then pushed back to August 2019 to give it more time to be worked on.

Has The New Mutants been delayed?

Since the last reschedule, there’s been no further news on The New Mutants – 20th Century Fox has stopped talking about the movie and there has been no new trailer. So what gives?

Well, a recent rumour suggests the film’s future is in doubt again. Another new release date could be on the cards (later than planned), or it may not get a theatrical release at all.

Scott Bechtel, co-host of the podcast, Merc with a Podcast has recently tweeted about the movie. In his initial tweet he said:

“Just heard a whisper through the grapevine. #newmutants will be delayed again. Fox & (writer/director Josh) Boone are really struggling coming to terms on a comprehensible and finish(ed) product. They’re looking to release it in early November. But..”

He continued: “Fox is still toying with a Hulu release in October for #newmutants. They’re trying to decide which method would have a more returnable value for an otherwise dead on arrival film.”

This tweet was followed up with…

“I come bearing news again regarding #newmutants. Had to wait a week on this but I finally got word it’s true. New Mutants will not be set in the same universe as the other X-Men films (DoFP, Deadpool, Dark Phoenix). The movie is on its own now (like Legion and Gifted).

Bechtel continued:

“Prior version had ties, but what Fox is going with is almost being scrubbed clean. It was so bad how much the film was being distant from the other films they almost cut out the word ‘mutant’ in film despite it being in the title. #newmutants”

Now it’s important to note that none of the above information comes from 20th Century Fox – this is all from Bechtel. However, it’s not out of the realms of possibility that he might be on the money with this.

The complete radio silence on The New Mutants does suggest there are still problems with the movie. Add this to the fact that Disney is taking control of the X-Men films, with a view to rebooting the X-Universe, and the movie’s future is becoming less certain.

So, will we see The New Mutants this year? At this point, who knows?!
