A new Sister Act movie is in the works.
That is the good news.
The bad?
It won’t star Whoopi Goldberg.
According to Variety, a third Sister Act movie is currently in development for Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+. Whoopi Goldberg – the star of the previous two Sister Act movies – is expected to cameo in the new film, but will not lead the picture.
Regina Hicks and Karin Gist are working on the script. No further details are available at this time.
Released in 1992, Sister Act starred Whoopi Goldberg, Maggie Smith and Harvey Keitel. The movie was a critical and commercial hit and was followed by Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993) and Sister Act: The Musical.
This new Sister Act is the latest project in development for Disney+, joining The Mandalorian, various Marvel TV shows, a remake of 3 Men and a Baby, a new take on The Sword in the Stone, shows for Monsters Inc., High School Musical and Rogue One and a new project featuring The Muppets.
2 Responses to Sister Act 3 is happening… but there is a catch
The right “star” packs a powerful punch, but if the story is decent enough… it might still make “the grade”.
Sadly, “sequels” (understandably) almost never reach the stature of the first.
*** that’s my opinion… obviously.

Yeah for the most part I agree, although in recent years we have seen some good sequels. Personally I’d much prefer to see a Sister Act sequel with Whoopi or an adaptation of Sister Act: The Musical, but I guess for Disney it makes more sense to go down another route.
