Aretha Franklin has died.

The American soul singer passed away at the age of 76. According to The Guardian, Franklin had been gravely ill with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Many people have taken to social media to pay their respects. Speaking via Twitter, singer/songwriter, Carole King, said: “What a life. What a legacy! So much love, respect and gratitude. R.I.P. @ArethaFranklin.”

Throughout the course of her career, Franklin became an icon with numerous hits including Respect and the George Michael duet, I Knew Your Were Waiting (For Me).
