What is DC Universe?

DC Universe is a digital subscription service designed to cater for fans of DC Entertainment. The service will provide exclusive content, including new live-action TV shows and animated series, alongside classic DC movies and programming.

In a press statement, Chief Creative Officer and Publisher for DC Entertainment, Jim Lee, said: “DC Universe is so much more than a streaming service. It’s a welcoming place for everyone to immerse themselves in their own level of DC fandom, with the epic characters, stories, and experiences they have come to expect from DC.” He added:”Nothing this robust has ever been offered to fans before.”

What will DC Universe include?

In addition to exclusive TV shows and a back catalogue of films and TV programmes, DC Universe will include access to a selection of digital comics, a DC-centric encyclopedia, exclusive merchandise, competitions, news and opportunities to connect socially with members of the DC community.

What new TV shows and movies will be available on DC Universe?

New TV shows, exclusive to DC Universe, will include: Titans, Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn and Young Justice: Outsiders.

Will the exclusive shows be available from launch?

No. Titans will be available in 2018, but Swamp Thing, Doom Patrol, Harley Quinn and Young Justice: Outsiders will all be arriving in 2019.

Is Young Justice: Outsiders a continuation of the Young Justice animated series?

Yes, Outsiders will be the show’s third season. According to a press release, Young Justice: Outsiders is “set against the backdrop of a rich, deep world that touches all corners of the DC Universe, the season focuses on meta–trafficking, and an intergalactic arms race for control of these super–powered youths.”

What classic TV shows and movies will be available on DC Universe?

The classic content available on DC Universe is expected to be pretty extensive as DC Entertainment has a huge back catalogue of shows and movies dating back decades. Confirmed content from the launch point includes: The Christopher Reeve Superman movies, the first two seasons of Batman: The Animated Series, the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series (in HD no less), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, Green Lantern: First Flight and the 2009 Wonder Woman movie.

In addition to the above content, the Batman movies, Teen Titans, Batman Beyond, Superfriends, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and Superman: Doomsday are all examples of films and TV shows that are being used in promotional material for the service. It’s likely that these examples will also feature amongst the mix.

What comics will be featured on DC Universe?

DC Entertainment is promising a “curated” collection of comics to appear on DC Universe, so expect a mix of iconic tales and must-read stories. A number of these comics will be linked to the TV/film content, giving subscribers the opportunity to read the stories that inspired the live-action and/or animated adaptations.

Action Comics #1 (Superman’s first appearance) and Detective Comics #27 (Batman’s first appearance) will be amongst the titles. Other books will include Scott Snyder’s run on Swamp Thing and Geoff Johns’ and Jim Lee’s Justice League.

Will the comics section of DC Universe be updated on a regular basis?

DC Entertainment plans to offer comics on a rotating basis.

How can subscribers read the comics?

Comics can be read online through smart phones and tablets, as well as through TV screens. Yep, TV screens.

What exclusive merchandise will be available on DC Universe?

DC Entertainment is promising “exclusive, curated and hard-to-find DC merchandise from a variety of licensing partners before the rest of the world.” So far, this includes a series of Justice League figures based on the animated series of the ’00s. These figures will be available to purchase later this year, but only to members of DC Universe.

What social facilities will DC Universe offer?

Members of DC Universe will be able to create their own profiles, interact with other members on forums and create & share their own, personalised playlists. DC Universe will be a moderated space to keep things running as smooth as possible.

What else will be available on DC Universe? 

Members will have access to the DC encyclopedia; will be able to keep up-to-date on all things DC with daily news and previews; and competitions and offers will also be included.

How much does DC Universe cost?

At present, DC Entertainment has not released a price point for DC Universe. The service will be entering Beta testing in August 2018, which will help DC Entertainment fix bugs, monitor feedback and ultimately determine pricing.

When will DC Universe be available?

No fixed date has been decided for DC Universe, however DC Entertainment has set a provisional date of fall (autumn) 2018.

What devices will support DC Universe? 

DC Universe will be available on iOS, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Android TV, in addition to the web.

Sadly not. When DC Universe launches it will only be available to US residents. For now, the rest of the world will have to wait.
