Roseannne is to continue – but without Roseanne.
The new show – The Conners – will move forward with the same creative team, cast and crew of the original show, minus lead character Roseanne Conner. According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has ordered a ten-episode, straight-to-series order for The Conners.
Roseanne Barr will have no creative involvement with the new series and will gain no financial benefit, having waived the right to any fees that come off the back of the series. Barr retains the rights to her character and any future spin-offs beyond The Conners and will be listed as an executive producer on the new show, as per the rules of the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA).
In a statement, Barr said: “I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”
Executive Producer, Tom Werner, said: “We are grateful to have reached this agreement to keep our team working as we continue to explore stories of the Conner family.”
The move to create a new show comes after ABC cancelled Roseanne last month.
