Take this one with a pinch of salt, simply because the original source is The Sun – a dire UK newspaper at best.

Anyway, according to The Sun (via The List), Jake Gyllenhaal is being lined up by Sony Pictures to play the villain in the next Spider-Man movie. The paper suggests that villain will be Mysterio – a classic comic book bad guy who uses tricks and illusions to commit his crimes.

Think of him as an evil version of David Blaine, only with a really crazy costume. A costume that includes a big dome covering his head!

So, is this likely?

Well, regardless of the source, this is entirely possible.

Mysterio was originally set to appear in the long-abandoned Spider-Man 4, with Bruce Campbell being lined up to take the role, so the character has been on Sony Pictures’ radar for some time. The last villain to be on the Sony radar – who was also lined up for Spider-Man 4 – was The Vulture, who became the villain for last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It’s also worth noting that Mysterio has yet to appear in any Spider-Man movie, making him a good choice for inclusion in a forthcoming Spidey project. But could this Spidey project be the as-yet-untitled sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming?

We won’t have too long to find out. Production is set to begin on the movie imminently, with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures co-producing. The movie will star Tom Holland, who is returning to the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
