This July, everyone’s favourite web-slinging Marvel super hero, Spider-Man, returns to the big screen. Spidey will be swinging into cinemas via the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III, and Michael Mando. In addition, Mark Ruffalo reprises the role of the Bruce Banner/the Hulk, while Jon Bernthal pops up as Frank Castle/the Punisher.
Describing the new movie, Sony Pictures said: “It’s a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.
“But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them.”
Picking up the story a few years after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day promises to be one of the biggest Spidey films yet. MCU fans are keen to see what happens next, and the inclusion of popular characters such as the Hulk and Punisher is sure to draw in audiences in their droves.
But when Spider-Man: Brand New Day makes its debut, will it be suitable for all ages? The Punisher is often depicted as a violent character, who appears in adult-only movies and television shows, so will this push up the age rating on this new Spider-Man movie?
Let’s take a look at the age rating to find out…

Spider-Man: Brand New Day UK age rating

In the UK, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been certified ‘12A’ by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has received this rating for “moderate violence, threat, injury detail, (and) implied strong language.”
In the UK, if a movie is given a ‘12A’ certificate it means the film is deemed most suitable for audiences aged 12 or over. However, children below the age of 12 can watch a ‘12A’ in a UK cinema, as long as they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
Based on the rating, the BBFC believe Spider-Man: Brand New Day is most suited for audiences aged 12 and over, but the organisation does recognise that some children below this age will be OK with the content of the movie. Parental discretion is advised.
So, if you are a parent and you have children below the age of 12, you can watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day together in a UK cinema. You may just want to check up on some of the content before attending your screening.
And if you’re unsure what ‘12A’ movies are like, it might help you to know that many comic book movies are rated ‘12A’, including the 2002’s Spider-Man and 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day US age rating

In the US, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been rated ‘PG-13’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). Spider-Man: Brand New Day has received this rating for sequences of action/violence and some language.
In the US, if a movie is rated ‘PG-13’ it means some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. Parents are urged to be cautious.
However, the rating is purely for guidance only. Anyone of any age can watch a ‘PG-13’ movie at a US cinema.
As such, if you are a parent and you want to take your children to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day, you can. Just take into account the advice from the MPA and act accordingly.
And if you’re still unsure about whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be appropriate for your children, you might like to know that previous live-action Spider-Man movies, including 2002’s Spider-Man, 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, were all rated ‘PG-13’ upon release. So, you may wish to take a look at one of these first, to gauge the tone and amount of action, violence, and language to expect in an average Spider-Man movie.
