Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters is a place of learning. A place of safety for mutants. A training ground for the X-Men.
But here’s something Xavier doesn’t tell anyone. Once mutants pass through his doors, they never go home. Not really.
Oh, some may visit the towns and cities they left behind, or head back to their birth country, but nobody ever goes back to their home for good. Once they leave, they stay left.
Xavier built a school for students who in a way never seem to graduate. Even mutants who quit the X-Men come back, and there are multiple reasons why.

Society keeps rejecting mutants
One of the main reasons why mutants are attached to Xavier’s School is because society continually rejects them. No matter what progress is made, the world can’t seem to fully open its arms to those who are different.
For every tolerant human, there is an intolerant bigot with a placard and hate in their heart. This is a constant reminder of the conflict mutants face for just being themselves.
And if bigotry isn’t enough, there is always some crisis or another taking place, which paints mutants in a bad light. Plus there are plenty of supervillains causing trouble, which in turn makes the mutant population appear dangerous and out of control.
The more the world rejects mutants, the more there is a need for the X-Men. And the bigger the crisis, the more the mutants are needed at the school.

The X-mansion is a home as much as a school
The second reason Xavier’s mutants tend to never go home is because Xavier’s School is a home. It’s as much a home as it is a school.
Lessons are conducted and training takes place around the grounds, but after hours it’s just like any other home. Or rather, for many it’s the home they always dreamt of.
Xavier’s School is a safe haven. Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and so many more mutants found safety at the school, when other so-called communities of safety closed their doors, or closed their hearts.

Many mutants remain emotionally tied to the X-Men for life
And finally, many mutants come to Xavier’s School after suffering rejection, either from their family, their friends, or the would around them. After finding solace at the school, and after being embraced as a valuable member of the X-Men, they now remain emotionally connected to the team and to the school that ‘saved’ them.
Cyclops, Beast, Jean Grey, Wolverine, and Storm are all long-termers. Sure, they might have left at some point, to join other teams such as X-Factor or the Avengers, but they always come back.
The school offered them a place to feel seen and nurtured. They can’t turn their back on this, nor can they detach themselves from their memories and their emotional connection to the school.
Once they walk through the doors of the X-mansion they are forever changed. Some mutants may never be able to go home because of the hatred that exists back there, but the others don’t go back because they have taken a transformative step forward.
