This July, Disney’s live-action remake of Moana arrives in cinemas. The film – from director Thomas Kail – stars Catherine Laga’aia, Dwayne Johnson, and Jemaine Clement, and follows the story of a young woman who leaves her home on an epic voyage to help her community.
Similar to previous Disney live-action remakes, Moana is set to feature the same characters and same general story as its predecessor. Audiences can also expect renditions of the iconic songs, including ‘You’re Welcome‘.
But when Moana arrives in cinemas, will this new movie be suitable for children? Will the change from animation to live-action alter the tone or themes of the story, and will it now be aimed at an older audience?
To answer those questions we need to take a look at the rating…

Moana (2026) UK rating

In the UK, Moana has been awarded a ‘PG’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The movie has received this rating for “mild threat”.
In the UK, movies rated ‘PG’ (Parental Guidance) are suitable for general viewing, although some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. If you are unsure about your own child, it might be advisable to watch the movie first, before attending a screening with the family.
However, to put things into context, the original animated version of Moana, released back in 2016, was also awarded a ‘PG’ certificate. So, if your children have watched the cartoon Moana and had no problems with it, then they probably won’t have a problem with the live-action version either.

Moana (2026) US rating

In the US, Moana has been rated ‘PG’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPA). The film has received this rating for action/peril, some scary images, rude humour and brief thematic elements.
In the US, if a movie is rated ‘PG’, parents are urged to use their own parental guidance. ‘PG’ rated movies may contain some material which parents may not like for their children, so use your judgement accordingly.
It’s worth noting, in the US, the cartoon version of Moana also received a ‘PG’ rating back in 2016. So, if you want to take a look at the animated movie for suitability and additional guidance, this may help.
