If you grew up during the 1990s, you’ll recall there were a lot of great sitcoms on air. One of those sitcoms was the excellent Sabrina the Teenage Witch, while another was Boy Meets World

Both shows were hugely successful, both ran for seven seasons, and both built up a loyal fanbase. But did you know that characters from one show crossed over into another?

Cast your mind back to season five of Boy Meets World and you may recall the episode ‘The Witches of Pennbrook’. The episode aired on Halloween night in 1997, and was a witch-filled instalment of the hit sitcom.

You may also recall this particular episode included a very special guest star; none other than Melissa Joan Hart. Hart appeared in ‘The Witches of Pennbrook’, playing her iconic character Sabrina Spellman (aka Sabrina the teenage witch).

The episode was conceived as a fun instalment for Halloween, with the inclusion of Sabrina as being the icing on the cake. Sabrina the Teenage Witch aired on the same channel (and on the same night) as Boy Meets World, so it made sense for a brief crossover.

But did you know, this wasn’t the only crossover between Boy Meets World and Sabrina the Teenage Witch? An even bigger one quickly followed, and this time around the crossover expanded to fit in four shows!

The four shows were Sabrina the Teenage WitchBoy Meets WorldWish, and Teen Angel. On November 7th 1997, all four shows aired on the same night in the US, via ABC’s programming block, TGIF, and for one night only they were all linked via an ongoing story thread.

The crossover storyline began in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, via the season two episode, ‘Inna Gadda Sabrina’. In the episode, smart-talkin’ cat, Salem, swallows a ‘time ball’ which transports Sabrina and her friends back to the 1960s.

Although the ‘60s storyline is seemingly resolved in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Salem’s journey continues as he pops up in the season five episode of Boy Meets World, ‘No Guts, No Cory’. In this episode, Salem’s time ball causes Cory Matthews to travel back to the 1940s.

Part three of the crossover storyline continues in the short-lived sitcom, Wish, via the season one episode, ‘Genie Without a Cause’. In this episode, the Apple family are transported back to the 1950s.

The crossover then concludes in the season one episode of Teen Angel, ‘One Dog Night’, which originally aired directly after Wish. In this final chapter, Sabrina Spellman travels to the 1970s to retrieve Salem and bring all the time-hopping hijinks to an end.

Across two hours of television, ABC managed to connect up four shows with one storyline. Sabrina and Salem popped up across the course of the storyline, and along with the time travel plot thread they became the glue which kept everything together.
