In 2004, the children’s television movie, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday aired on The WB. Based on the American Girl children’s books by Susan S. Adler and Valerie Tripp, the movie followed the story of Samantha Parkington – a wealthy young girl living in a large country house in the town of Mount Bedford, New York.

Upon making its debut, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday was a hit with viewers. So much so, actress Olivia Ballantyne (Jenny O’Malley in the movie) won a Young Artist Award for ‘Best Performance in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Special’.

Following the film’s release, another movie was produced, taking more inspiration from the American Girl book series. This in turn was followed by yet more films, building up to a sizeable and successful run of children’s movies in the process.

As noted above, the first entry in the series made its debut in 2004 under the title, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday. Set in the year 1904, the film followed the story of wealthy Samantha Parkington and her adventures with three orphan girls.

Felicity: An American Girl Adventure (2005)

The second movie in the series arrived in 2005, titled Felicity: An American Girl Adventure. This film focuses on ten-year-old Felicity Merriman and her adventures during the American Revolution.

Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front (2006)

For movie number three, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front, the action is transported to 1943, during the days of World War II.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008)

After three direct-to-TV movies, this fourth entry was screened in cinemas under the title, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. This film focuses on the titular Kit Kittredge, who lives in Cincinnati, Ohio during the Great Depression.

An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong (2009)

Back to television for movie number five, An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong. This film focuses on Chrissa Maxwell – a young girl who moves with her family from Iowa to Minnesota to be closer to Chrissa’s grandmother.

Movie number six is An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars. This movie centres its story around McKenna Brooks, as she attempts to balance her school life with her career as a gymnast.
