In 2012, Australian drama series, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries made its debut. The crime series – created by Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger – was based on a series of mystery novels by Kerry Greenwood and followed the story of glamorous private detective, Phryne Fisher.

Set in the 1920s, Essie Davis took on the role of Phryne, alongside a cast which included Nathan Page, Ashleigh Cummings, Hugo Johnstone-Burt and Richard Bligh. The series aired on Australia’s ABC and was a big hit with audiences.

Due to the success of the first season, further seasons soon followed, along with a theatrical movie. A spin-off series was also commissioned, which expanded the Miss Fisher mythology further.

The first episode of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries hit television screens on 24th February 2012. The episode was titled ‘Cocaine Blues’ and was based on Kerry Greenwood’s novel of the same name.

The season then continued until summer 2012, clocking up a total of 13 episodes in the process. Most of the episodes were based on Greenwood’s novels and once the season was complete, ABC quickly announced the show would return for a second run.

Season two hit screens in September 2013, beginning with the episode ‘Murder Most Scandalous’. The season then continued until the end of the year, with the 13th instalment (a Christmas special) airing in December.

A third season then followed from May 2015, beginning with the episode ‘Death Defying Feats’. This season was slightly shorter than the previous two, running eight episodes rather than the standard 13.

At the end of season three, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries came to an end. However, while the weekly adventures of Phryne Fisher were over, this wasn’t quite the end of the story.

In 2020, Essie Davis reprised the role of Phryne for the big screen mystery-adventure movie, Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears. The events of the film – directed by Tony Tilse – took place after the conclusion of season three, however, the movie itself acted as a stand-alone tale to allow Miss Fisher newbies to jump on board should they wish.

Although the movie was created as an extension of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, it wasn’t the only project to continue the show’s legacy. In 2019, a Miss Fisher spin-off series was also commissioned, to bring more mystery and drama to Aussie viewers.

The spin-off series – titled Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries – was set in the 1960s and followed the story of Peregrine Fisher, the daughter of Phryne’s half-sister Annabelle.

Geraldine Hakewill took on the role of Peregrine, alongside a cast that included Joel Jackson and Catherine McClements. The first episode of the show, titled ‘Just Murdered’, aired on February 21st 2019.

Season one ran for four episodes on the Seven Network. The show then switched to Acorn for season two, which ran for eight episodes in 2021.
