In 1994, comic book movie The Mask opened in cinemas. The action-comedy, about a bank clerk who could transform into a superhero, entertained audiences and became a smash-hit.

In the film, actor Jim Carrey took on the role of Stanley Ipkiss, as well as his alter-ego the eponymous Mask. During the course of the story, Ipkiss discovers wonderous reality-altering powers, but finds himself in trouble with a local gangster.

Due to the success of The Mask, the film spawned a cartoon series, and a toyline. It also led to a oft-forgotten sequel.

But how many Mask movies are there? For all the details, keep reading.

The Mask (1994)

As noted above, the first movie in the series arrived in 1994 under the title, The Mask. Based on the Dark Horse Comics character of the same name, the film followed the exploits of mild-mannered bank clerk, Stanley Ipkiss, as well as his alter-ego, the Mask.

Jim Carrey took on the role of both Ipkiss and the Mask, working opposite a cast which included Cameron Diaz. The film proved to be a big success, and one of Carrey’s big hits of the year. (101 mins)

Son of the Mask (2005)

Due to the success of The Mask, New Line Cinema (the studio behind the film) was keen to develop a sequel, with Jim Carrey remaining on board as Stanley Ipkiss. However, all attempts to develop a sequel around Carrey soon fell to the wayside, and eventually (after years in development hell) the film fell apart.

Without Carrey, the project eventually moved forward under the title Son of the Mask, but with a new actor in the shape of Jamie Kennedy. In the movie, Kennedy played the role of aspiring animator, Tim Avery, whose child is born with the powers of the Mask. (94 mins)

Are all of the Mask movies part of the same series?

Yes… sort of.

The two Mask movies are supposed to be part of the same series, but the link between the two films is very tenuous at best. Put simply, Son of the Mask is only very (very) loosely connected to The Mask.

Jim Carrey is the lead character of The Mask, while Jamie Kennedy leads Son of the Mask. The films follow different characters and tell largely different stories, so can easily be viewed as two separate films.
