Hold onto your laughing gear, because a new horror comedy is arriving in cinemas very shortly. Directed by Zelda Williams, the movie stars Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, and Carla Gugino and is titled Lisa Frankenstein.
Loosely inspired by Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, ‘Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus’, Lisa Frankenstein follows the story of a teenage girl named Lisa, who reanimates a Victorian-era corpse. Set during the 1980s, Lisa hopes to turn the corpse into her dream guy, while hilarity ensues.
Written by Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body), Lisa Frankenstein arrives in US cinemas on Friday February 9th, before opening in the UK on Friday March 1st. The movie is one of the big releases of early 2024, and thanks to its subject matter is likely to catch the attention of a teenage audience.
But is Lisa Frankenstein suitable for a teenager? And more importantly, what is the age rating of the movie?

In the US, Lisa Frankenstein is rated ‘PG-13’ by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). The film has been given this rating by the MPAA due to violent content, bloody imagery, language, and drug content.
In the US, a film which carries a ‘PG-13’ rating can be watched by anyone, however, parents are cautioned. Films rated ‘PG-13’ contain some material which may be unsuitable for anyone under the age of 13, so parents are asked to keep this in mind.
Meanwhile, in the UK, Lisa Frankenstein has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The film has been awarded a ‘15’ certificate due to strong violence and bloody images.
In the UK, a ‘15’ certificate movie is suitable only for those aged 15 and above. No one below the age of 15 will be permitted to watch the film at their local cinema.

So, what does this all mean exactly? Well, depending on where you live in the world there are different restrictions and different guidance.
If you live in the US, it doesn’t matter what age you are, you can watch Lisa Frankenstein in the cinema should you wish. The MPAA suggests the film may not be entirely suitable if you are under the age of 13, but you can still watch the film in movie theatres and it is deemed suitable for a teenager (i.e. anyone 13+).
If you live in the UK things are different, as the BBFC believes Lisa Frankenstein is not suitable for anyone under the age of 15, and therefore is not suitable for all teenagers. If you’re below the age of 15, you will not be able to watch Lisa Frankenstein at the cinema, no matter if you’re accompanied by an adult or you believe you are mature enough.
So, is Lisa Frankenstein suitable for a teenager? Yes, if you live in the US, but if you live in the UK it is only suitable for some teenagers.
And now you know.
