As the spooky season begins to get under way, a new entry in the Conjuring Universe arrives in cinemas. The film is The Nun II – a supernatural horror movie from director Michael Chaves.
Set four years after 2018’s The Nun, this spooky follow-up stars Bonnie Aarons, Taissa Farmiga, and Anna Popplewell. The Nun II is the ninth instalment in the popular horror series, following on from The Conjuring (2013), Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Nun (2018), The Curse of La Llorona (2019), Annabelle Comes Home (2019), and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021).
When the movie arrives in cinemas on September 8th in the US and the UK, it is expected to prove popular with audiences. The Conjuring Universe has a strong fanbase, and tends to attract the teen crowd.
But is The Nun II suitable for say, a 13-year-old? And more importantly, what is the age rating of The Nun II?

In the US, The Nun II has been awarded an ‘R’ rating by the Motion Picture Association (MPA). The Nun II has received this rating due to violent content and some terror.
An ‘R’ rating in the US means the film is considered ‘restricted’ because it contains some adult material. Anyone can watch an ‘R’ rated movie in cinemas, but those under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian to view the film.
When it comes to ‘R’ rated movies, the MPA urges parents to check out the movie before taking their young children to a screening. In this case, the MPA believe some of the content in The Nun II may not be appropriate for all ages.

In the UK, The Nun II has been given a ’15’ certificate by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The Nun II has received this certificate by the BBFC due to strong horror, violence, and bloody images.
A ’15’ certificate means the film is considered unsuitable for anyone under the age of 15. In the UK, audiences who are under 15 will not be permitted to view The Nun II at the cinema.
It doesn’t matter if your 13-year-old son or daughter wishes to see The Nun II at the cinema, and you agree to accompany them, if they’re not 15 or older the cinema will refuse them entry. Please be aware of this.

So, back to the earlier question: Is The Nun II suitable for a 13-year-old?
In the US, The Nun II can be watched by a 13-year-old, but they must be accompanied by an adult because some of the material may not be appropriate (parents are cautioned). Meanwhile, in the UK, The Nun II cannot be watched by a 13-year-old – audience members must be aged 15 or over.
