To date, there are nine films in The Conjuring Universe. The movie series – based around the paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren – have proved incredibly popular with audiences, and this has resulted in some spooky stories.
But are you up to date with all the movies? And do you know your Annabelles from your Nuns?
More importantly, do you know what order to watch The Conjuring movies?
You don’t?! Oh, jeez.
OK, below you will find a quick rundown of the viewing orders for The Conjuring Universe. I’ll keep things simple, so that you can get up to date with the movies as quickly as possible, but I will give you two options to follow: Production order or chronological/timeline order.
___
The Conjuring in production order

If you’re not fussed about watching the films in the ‘in-universe’ timeline order, and you simply want to watch The Conjuring movies in the order they were released, then you you should watch the movies in production order. This order jumps back and forth across the timeline, but the story still makes perfect sense, and you’ll get to watch the movies in the exact order they appeared in cinemas.
The Conjuring movies in production order:
- The Conjuring (2013)
- Annabelle (2014)
- The Conjuring 2 (2016)
- Annabelle: Creation (2017)
- The Nun (2018)
- The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
- Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
- The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
- The Nun 2 (2023)
___
The Conjuring movies in chronological timeline order

And now onto an alternative viewing order…
As with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the films in The Conjuring Universe are released in a non-linear order, with some films acting as sequels, and others acting as prequels. As such, if you want to watch the films chronologically (i.e. in timeline order) then you need to watch them in a different order to how they were originally released in cinemas.
For example, in terms of the timeline, the events of The Nun take place first, with the events of Annabelle: Creation and The Nun 2 following next. Then the timeline continues with Annabelle, The Conjuring, and so on…
If you with to watch The Conjuring movies in timeline order, then follow this list:
- The Nun (2018)
- Annabelle: Creation (2017)
- The Nun 2 (2023)
- Annabelle (2014)
- The Conjuring (2013)
- Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
- The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
- The Conjuring 2 (2016)
- The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

The shorts
In addition to the movies listed above, The Conjuring Universe also includes a small collection of (non-essential) shorts. The shorts are the result of a competition that Warner Bros. Pictures launched in 2017, to promote Annabelle: Creation.
The idea behind these shorts was that they ‘could exist’ in The Conjuring Universe. Winners were selected from the United States, the UK, Mexico, Sweden and Colombia.
The shorts are as follows:
- The Nurse (2017)
- The Confession (2017)
- What’s Wrong with Mom? (2017)
- Blund’s Lullaby (2017)
- Innocent Souls (2017)
Please note, these shorts are not essential viewing, and are difficult to track down. Unless you are desperate to view them, you should just stick to the movies.

If you’re a fan of The Conjuring Universe, you may wish to know that all of the movies are currently available on Blu-ray and DVD.
You can find six of the movies collected together in a neat little Blu-ray box set, appropriately titled Conjuring Universe 6-Film Collection.
The collection includes: The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle, Annabelle Creation, Annabelle Comes Home, and The Nun (the only movies not included in the collection are The Curse of La Llorona and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It).

Until next time, happy haunting.

Anabelle comes home has to be before Conjuring 1 since that’s when they bring the doll to the Warren’s and in Conjuring 1, the witch is holding the doll at the Warrens house.

The timeline gets a little confusing, and it’s not helped by some of the films including events which take place in different time periods, but…
The opening of The Conjuring (all the bits with the nurses) takes place in 1968. However, the main events of the film take place in 1971 – three years after the Warren’s have Annabelle in their possession.
The opening of Annabelle Comes Home also takes place in 1968, but the main events of the film take place in 1972 – a year after the events of The Conjuring.

I’m glad I watched the Nun before Annabelle though. It’s nice to get that there’s a couple that takes chargge of things in the world,, and knowing their origin. A bad story isn’t good if it doesn’t have heroes in it. A story about bad.
