If you’re a music fan, here’s a bit of info for future reference. Netflix has announced it is to produce a new documentary film about the life of legendary Mexican recording star, prolific songwriter, and global icon, Juan Gabriel.

The news of the docu-film comes after Netflix reached an agreement with the Gabriel estate to make the project happen. According to the streaming service, the agreement will “grant access to Juan Gabriel’s music and exclusive never before seen access into the life of the singer through extensive archive materials.”

Award-winning director María José Cuevas will be calling the shots on the new docu-film. The filmmaker previously helmed 2016’s Beauties of the Night and is behind the upcoming Netflix documentary film The Lady of Silence: The Mataviejitas Murders.

Meanwhile, Laura Woldenberg and Ivonne Gutierrez from independent Mexican documentary production company Mezcla will be on producer duties. The pair previously produced the critically acclaimed docu-film The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo, as well as the documentary series 1994.

Commenting on the new documentary, Juan Gabriel’s son, Iván Aguilera, said: “We are excited to collaborate with Netflix to release the story of my father’s personal life and musical career in this Documentary with Maria Jose Cuevas and with Mezcla.

“Bringing my father’s true story to the screen has been a project we have wanted to release for quite some time now. 

“We are confident that with this team we have built, we can work closely together to bring his true story to life.”

Juan Gabriel is one of the most popular Latino music figures in recent history, whose hits include ‘Hasta que te conocí’, ‘Abrázame Muy Fuerte’, and ‘Amor Eterno’, amongst many, many others. Before he passed away in 2016, he released more than 47 albums, received multiple awards, and even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

No date has been set for the new docu-film about his life, but production will get underway this year. Filming will take place in the US and Mexico, with the documentary set to stream on Netflix in the near future.
