In 1996, action thriller, The Substitute, opened in cinemas. The film starred Tom Berenger and followed the story of a Vietnam veteran who goes undercover at an inner-city high school, to deal with a gang problem.
Although The Substitute wasn’t met with a warm reception from critics, upon release it proved mildly popular at the box office. As such, the series continued as a collection of loosely connected direct-to-DVD sequels, with Treat Williams taking over as the lead actor in the series.

The order of The Substitute movies

To date there are four entries in The Substitute movie series:
- The Substitute (1996)
- The Substitute 2: School’s Out (1998)
- The Substitute 3: Winner Takes All (1999)
- The Substitute: Failure Is Not An Option (aka The Substitute 4) (2001)
All four entries are part of the same series, however, the first entry is only loosely connected to the sequels.
In the first film, Tom Berenger plays the lead role of Jonathan Shale, while for the three sequels, Treat Williams takes over as lead character, Karl Thomasson. With Williams remaining on board for all three sequels, these movies are more tightly connected.
