After making her way into the movie industry in the late 1990s, Melissa McCarthy has built up a reputation as one of the funniest actresses in Hollywood. Her career has seen her take on various roles, in a number of tentpole pictures, often playing up the comedic side of her personality.
McCarthy’s pictures have ranged from laugh-out-loud comedy, Bridesmaids, to superhero caper, Thunder Force. The actress has crossed genres a few times, and built up a fan-following in the process.

None of her roles in this decade where scene-stealers (most were blink-and-you’ll-miss-it parts), but McCarthy’s career was beginning to build some momentum. During this time she mixed her film work with roles on television, including a long-running stint on the show, Gilmore Girls, playing the part of Sookie St. James.

2010s

Sliding into the 2010s and this is when McCarthy’s big screen career really took off. After years of playing minor parts, McCarthy took a supporting role in the 2011 hit-comedy, Bridesmaids, and this changed everything.
Playing the part of Megan in the film, McCarthy stood out from the crowd and became a big hit with audiences. She stole every scene she was in, and this made the industry pay attention.
After Bridesmaids, McCarthy appeared as the co-lead alongside Jason Bateman in 2013’s Identity Thief, and then popped up alongside Sandra Bullock in The Heat. The following year, she headlined the comedy, Tammy, while in 2015 she played the lead in Spy.
Due to her success in a string of comedies, McCarthy was cast in 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot, where she appeared alongside Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. However, while the film was looked on favourably by critics, an internet hate campaign derailed the film’s box-office success and it was deemed a flop.
But the issues surrounding Ghostbusters didn’t cause too many problems for McCarthy and further movies followed. In 2018 she took on the role of Lee Israel for the drama, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, which proved to be another hit with the critics and showcased her versatility as an actress.
