In 1980, ultra-camp space fantasy movie, Flash Gordon, blasted its way onto cinema screens. The film – based on Alex Raymond’s comic strip of the same name – starred Sam. J. Jones, Max von Sydow, Melody Anderson, Topol, Timothy Dalton, and Brian Blessed, and followed the story of a football player who is taken from Earth and finds himself battling against the evil villain, Ming the Merciless.
Bright, bonkers, and mad as a box of frogs, Flash Gordon was a superhero picture that was a lot of fun, but sadly, the world wasn’t quite ready for it back in 1980. Although the movie was a big hit in some territories (Italy and the UK), it struggled at the box office elsewhere and was considered a bit of flop.
However, since its release, Flash Gordon has been reappraised many times over, has built up a huge cult following, and is now considered a loveable comic book romp not to be overlooked.
