In 1923, Dick Cruikshanks directed the silent coming-of-age movie, The Blue Lagoon. The film – based on the romance novel of the same name by Henry De Vere Stacpoole – told the story of two children, who learn about themselves and the world around them, after they become stranded together on a tropical island.

Fast-forward twenty-six years after the release of The Blue Lagoon, and a second movie hit cinema screens. The film – also titled The Blue Lagoon – was produced during the era of sound, featured a whole new cast, and was not connected to the original.

At this point in time, both movies came and went without a great deal of fanfare. However, jump ahead another thirty-one years, and in 1980 a third Blue Lagoon movie was released and this time it really struck a chord with audiences.

The movie – once again titled The Blue Lagoon – starred Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. The film retold the story of the two children as they begin a romance on the island, and it became a big hit at the box-office.

Due to the popularity of this third entry, more Blue Lagoon movies soon followed. None of them reached the same heights as this third film, but that didn’t stop the series from producing additional entries.

But how many Blue Lagoon movies are there altogether, and are any of them connected? For all the details and more, keep reading.

The Blue Lagoon movie series is a collection of largely unconnected films which don’t need to be watched in a specific order (with one exception). The films breakdown as follows:

  • The Blue Lagoon (1923) – The original silent movie, adapted from Henry De Vere Stacpoole’s novel. This film is now sadly lost to time.
  • The Blue Lagoon (1949) – A second adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole’s novel.
  • The Blue Lagoon (1980) and Return to the Blue Lagoon (1991) – The third adaptation of Henry De Vere Stacpoole’s novel, followed by a direct sequel.
  • Pengantin Pantai Biru (1983) – An Indonesian adaptation of The Blue Lagoon novel.
  • Blue Lagoon: The Awakening (2012) – An updated take on The Blue Lagoon story, inspired by the novel and the previous movies.
