In 1997, horror comedy, Troublesome Night, arrived in cinemas. The film – directed by Steve Cheng, Victor Tam, and Herman Yau – focused on four loosely connected stories, all set in the haunted streets of Hong Kong.

Due to the popularity of the movie, a sequel – appropriately titled Troublesome Night 2 – followed later that year. This was accompanied by two more sequels the following year, another two in 1999, and a lot more movies in the years that followed.
