In 1981, following the breakout success of John Carpenter’s horror movie, Halloween, a sequel arrived in cinemas. The appropriately titled Halloween II – directed by Rick Rosenthal – picked up immediately after its predecessor, with serial killer Michael Myers continuing his murderous rampage in Haddonfield.
Although not as well-received as Halloween, Halloween II quickly found its audience and helped to increase the popularity of Michael Myers on the big screen. The film also added more depth to the Myers mythology and gave more screen time to the character of Dr. Sam Loomis, as played by Donald Pleasence.
In this post, I am taking a look back at Halloween II with a run-through of the best lines from the movie. These quotes provide a flavour of the horror and darkness in the film, and give an idea of why this sequel remains a hit with fans.

Sam Loomis – “In order to appease the gods, the Druid priests held fire rituals. Prisoners of war, criminals, the insane, animals… were… burned alive in baskets. By observing the way they died, the Druids believed they could see omens of the future. Two thousand years later, we’ve come no further. Samhain isn’t evil spirits. It isn’t goblins, ghosts or witches. It’s the unconscious mind. We’re all afraid of the dark inside ourselves.”

Sam Loomis – “What file?”
Marion – “It isn’t fair. They should have allowed you to examine everything. That girl. That Strode girl. That’s Michael Myers’ sister. She was born two years before he was committed. Two years after his parents died, she was adopted by the Strodes. They requested that the records be sealed in order to protect the family.”
Sam Loomis – “Jesus, don’t you see what he’s doing here in Haddonfield? He killed one sister 15 years ago, now he’s trying to kill the other.”

And finally…

Sam Loomis – “If that wasn’t Michael Myers burning up in that car, then a lot of other kids are going to be slaughtered tonight.”
Gary Hunt – “He’s dead. You saw it.”
Sam Loomis – “I saw a man in a mask.”
Gary Hunt – “It was him.”
Sam Loomis – “I want to believe you, but I have to be sure. I can’t stop until I’m certain that he’s dead.”
Gary Hunt – “You’re talking about him like he’s some kind of animal.”
Sam Loomis – “He was my patient for fifteen years. He became an obsession with me until I realized that there was nothing within him, neither conscious nor reason that was… even remotely human. An hour ago, I stood up and fired six shots into him and then he just got up and walked away. I am talking about the real possibility that he is still out there!”
