The Stuart Little movies are all part of the same series, however, there is a significant difference between the first two films and the third instalment. Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2 are part live-action/part computer-animated films which were released theatrically, while Stuart Little 3 is a computer-animated film that was released direct-to-video.

Why is Stuart Little 3 different to Stuart Little and Stuart Little 2?
The reason Stuart Little 3 is an animated feature, rather than a mix of live-action and animation, is because the third instalment was produced on a much smaller budget than its predecessors. This smaller budget meant there was less money to shoot a live-action/animated picture, so a cartoon film was favoured instead.
As for why Stuart Little 3 had a smaller budget, this is because of a desire to cut production costs on the film. And the reduction in production costs was tied to the financial success of the first two films.
When Stuart Little was released in 1999, it made over $300 million at the worldwide box office; however, when Stuart Little 2 was released in 2002, it made considerably less, taking a total of just under $170 million. As the third film was likely to make even less money again, a decision was made to reduce production costs on Stuart Little 3 to ensure the film could still make a profit.
