Over the past couple of days, I have published a couple of reviews for movies which are new to streaming. These films – Cadaver and Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey – are feature length tales, which most Netflix subscribers will have come across when scrolling through the streaming service’s latest releases.
Today I want to draw your attention to something very different. This is a new release for Netflix, but one which is a little more obscure, and more likely to get overlooked.
The film is the animated short, If Anything Happens I Love You. This is a powerful piece of storytelling, incredibly emotive, and one which is vastly different to the releases mentioned above.
The 12-minute movie, written and directed by Michael Govier and Will McCormack, follows two parents coming to terms with the death of their daughter, and is both heart-wrenching and beautiful. Largely told in black and white, with a few dashes of colour here and there, If Anything Happens I Love You features no dialogue, and instead relies on strong visuals and music to convey its message.
Without delving too much into the story, If Anything Happens I Love You is effectively divided into three acts, with the first act following the parents as they work through their anger and bewilderment at losing their child. The movie then transitions into a series of flashbacks to more happier times for act two, before dealing with the tragedy and latter stages of their journey for the final act.
All throughout the film, the animation is kept quite simple, using sketches and bold imagery to unravel the story. The emphasis is on using small scale details to invoke a truly captivating tale, with a few colour themes woven in to represent emotion.
To say If Anything Happens I Love You is good would be an understatement. This is a masterclass in animation – something you would expect to see Pixar produce, although this is the work of Gilbert Films and Oh Good Productions.
It is not an easy film to sit through, and I imagine everyone who watches it will feel moved. It tells so much in such a short period of time, really getting to the heart of a tragic incident, and as you will see, the subject matter is very reflective of the times we live in.
If Anything Happens I Love You is available to stream now and is highly recommended. This isn’t a movie that you will sit down to watch as your evening entertainment; but you should find 12 minutes in your day to give it your attention.
