Cast your mind back to September 2018. The air was crisp, citizens of the world moved around freely, and iconic video rental chain, Blockbuster was resurrected (kind of) by the unlikeliest of heroes – Deadpool!
Have no idea what I’m talking about? Ah, then you don’t remember Blockbuster’s very brief revival thanks to the Merc with a Mouth.
To celebrate the release of Deadpool 2 – which arrived on digital download back in September 2018 – 20th Century Fox set up a pop-up Blockbuster store to give away copies of the film.
According to Time Out, a Blockbuster pop-up store was set up at 133 Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch on Monday 17th September for two days, to give away a limited-edition VHS case. The case sadly did not contain a VHS tape, but it did contain a digital download code for the film.
In order to receive a copy of the VHS/digital combo, recipients needed to meet specific criteria. The criteria was as follows:
- a.) Have an old Blockbuster video rental card in their possession
- b.) Be willing to take part in an X-Force-style audition
In total, 1,989 copies of the movie were being given away as part of the Deadpool 2 promotion. The number of copies related to the year Blockbuster first opened in London (1989).
Did I get a copy?
Sadly I did not.
As previously discussed, I miss video rental stores a lot, but I can’t for the life of me recall what happened to my old Blockbuster card! Plus, I live in Manchester, not London, so there was a logistical issue too.
But to all those who did manage to grab one of the VHS cases, I hope you still treasure it to this day. I also hope you have kept hold of your Blockbuster card, as you never know when it might come in handy again!
