In 1987, Playmates Toys produced a collection of action figures based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The figures – just like the comics and TV show they were based on – were incredibly popular and led to the release of further toys.

With each successive wave of figures and playsets, the toys became wackier and more detailed. In fact, many of the Turtles toys were incredibly detailed, with fun little touches here and there to make them some of THE BEST toys on the market.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Turtles brand, the original toy line lasted for a decade, before being replaced by subsequent lines based on new Turtles movies and shows. Playmates remained with the brand (and still manufactures Turtles toys to this day), but it is fair to say that only a few of the later lines matched the quality or innovation of the early years.

As a big fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and as someone who has a stack of figures in his possession, I thought it might be fun to take a look at a few. Below is a collection of snapshots, highlighting the fun and detail that was put into the line.
