Released in December 2017, mere days after the highly anticipated release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a surprise hit of the holiday season. The movie – a soft reboot of 1995’s Jumanji – became a huge money earner for Sony Pictures and jump-started the franchise.

In this post, I am taking a look at the box office success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle – from how much money the movie made to how it paved the way for a sequel.

How much money did Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle make?

To say Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was financially successful is somewhat of an understatement. When the movie hit cinemas in 2017 it was incredibly lucrative and far exceeded expectations – but who would have predicted it?

Prior to its release, some had written off Welcome to the Jungle as an unnecessary reworking of Jumanji. Sure, based on the brand name it might do OK, but it wasn’t going to be a huge hit, was it?

But all that changed when cinema-goers started to watch the film. They loved it; they really loved it, and quickly told their friends, who told their friends, and so on.

Encouraging reviews, plus positive word of mouth, cemented Jumanji’s status as a crowd pleaser. And as the positivity spread, the film continued to maintain its audience – establishing itself as a picture with legs, that would remain in cinemas for some time.

But how much money did Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle make during this run? An eye-watering amount!

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle made a whopping $962,102,237 at the worldwide box office during its theatrical run. This equated to: 

• $404,540,171 – Domestic 
• $557,562,066 – International

Total: $962,102,237

Almost one billion dollars! And this is a movie which opened opposite a Star Wars film.

Charting Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’s box office success (and beyond)

When Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle opened in December 2017, it is fair to say that all eyes were on Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The Star Wars sequel was creating a lot of headlines (not necessarily for the right reasons) and this meant the Jumanji reboot was largely left to its own devices.

Although Jumanji didn’t reach the Number 1 spot on its opening weekend – that accolade went to The Last Jedi – the film demonstrated stamina during its first couple of weeks.

By January 2018, Jumanji was already seeing strong financial returns and was performing consistently. It climbed its way up to the top of the charts, and remained there for three weeks.

Feb 5th 2018

By early February, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle had topped the US box office chart for a fourth week. After temporarily being dethroned by Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the movie returned to the Number 1 spot for a fourth time.

Jumanji took around $11 million dollars in the week running up to 5th February, pushing the movie’s total up to $855 million.

10th Feb 2018

Due to the overwhelming success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, reports began to circulate that a sequel was in development. According to Deadline, Sony was keen to reunite the cast (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart et al) to recapture the magic for a second time.

The film’s box office had now risen to $860.8 million and was continuing to climb.

April 11th 2018

After a steady increase throughout March and into early April, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle became the highest grossing Sony movie in the US. The film took the crown away from previous record holder, Spider-Man (2002), which had held the domestic title for 16 years.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle becomes Sony’s most profitable movie domestically, having taken $403,714, 915 compared to Spider-Man‘s $403,706,375.

By April 11th, Jumanji had raked in $950,803,053 at the worldwide box office. This made Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Sony’s second highest grossing movie of all-time, behind Skyfall (2012).

April 24th 2018

On April 24th, the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is officially given a release date of Christmas 2019. The film is scheduled to hit cinemas Christmas 2019, opposite Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, thus mirroring the release pattern of Christmas 2017. 

Meanwhile, Jumanji continues to entice audiences into cinemas. The film finally tops out at an incredible $962,102,237.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was an incredible performer at the worldwide box office. It proved that movies can build up a huge, sustained (and profitable) following over time, so long as they connect with audiences.
