In a matter of days, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will pass the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office – and when it does it will become the ninth, billion dollar film of 2019.
At present, The Rise of Skywalker has raked in $989,968,274. Within days it will join Avengers: Endgame, The Lion King, Frozen II, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Captain Marvel, Toy Story 4, Joker, and Aladdin in the 2019 billion dollar club.
Nine, billion dollar movies in one year is incredible, right?
Well, yes it is – but it’s nothing when compared to how many movies have achieved similar status within the last decade.
Including The Rise of Skywalker, 46 films have made more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office since film records began. Of those 46 films, 39 were released between 2010 and 2019.
This last decade of cinema has really pushed the boundaries of box office potential. I wonder what 2020 – 2029 will achieve?

I was desperate for Richard E Grant to throw in a line from Withnail & I during his Star Wars scenes, for example “We want the finest wines known to humanity” would have fitted in well with his character.

Yeah, it kind of felt bizarre him even being in the movie.

I found him distracting the first time, but then thought his casting was pretty good when I saw the movie the second time

When it comes out on home video I will give it another look. I think my opinion of the film could differ on second viewing.
