It’s been a busy weekend.
On Friday I checked out Ma. Saturday I spent time (and money) at Comic Con Manchester 2019, then revisited the Gremlins movies. Today I popped over to Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to watch the classical concert, The Best of John Williams.
It was superb.
The concert – performed by the Manchester Concert Orchestra – played a retrospective of the composer’s work. From Leia’s Theme to Duel of the Fates.
For those interested in this kind of thing, the set list included music from: Jaws, Superman, Jurassic Park, Munich, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hook, The Phantom Menace, Schindler’s List, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T – The Extraterrestrial, The Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope.

This isn’t the first time I’ve sat down to watch a John Williams retrospective at Bridgewater Hall – this is the third (or possibly fourth) time. Each concert has been as good as the next and today was no different.
In addition to playing all the iconic pieces of music from some of Hollywood’s greatest hits, the conductor of today’s show provided a few anecdotes to connect up the material. These ranged from stories about the movies that Williams has worked on, to jokes and little asides to the audience.
I had a ball at The Best of John Williams and it goes without saying I highly recommend it to those with a love for film scores. Anyone in the Manchester area that has chance to go to a future concert, give it a whirl!
