Well… this is unexpected.

CBS’ new Star Trek series – the one featuring the return of Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard – has been picked up by Amazon for international distribution. The series will air in the US on CBS All Access, before streaming internationally via Amazon Prime Video.

The announcement came via the official Star Trek social media accounts, with a statement that read: “Incoming Transmission! The untitled ‘Star Trek’ Jean-Luc Picard series will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in more than 200 countries+ outside the US and Canada and on CBS All Access in the United States.”

This is surprising news, because CBS’ other Trek show, Star Trek Discovery, currently streams via Netflix. It was presumed that Netflix would air this new series too… but apparently not.

No official air date just yet, but the as yet untitled Picard series is expected to arrive later this year.
