In a move that seemed inevitable, director James Gunn has been hired by DC Entertainment.

According to Deadline, the Guardians of the Galaxy director is writing the next instalment of Suicide Squad. At present the appointment is only a writing gig, but may become a directing job too, in time.

Gunn previously directed two Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Disney/Marvel Studios before being fired after old social media comments resurfaced earlier this year. Since being dropped by Disney many speculated the director would be picked up by Warner Bros./DC Entertainment to work on one of the many projects currently in development.

The first Suicide Squad movie was released in 2016 and while not a critical success the movie was a financial hit, convincing Warner Bros. Pictures to push forward with a sequel. No news on when the sequel will arrive.
