The BBC’s long-running sci-fi series, Doctor Who is on the move – from Saturday to Sunday.
The show will kick-start it’s new season from Sunday October 7th, moving from it’s traditional Saturday night slot to a Sunday screening. No time slot has been announced just yet.
So, why the move?
Why not?
I’m pretty sure tomorrow the newspapers will be running stories that the show is on it’s last legs/introducing a female Doctor is killing the series/cancellation is on the cards* etc (*please delete as applicable), but I don’t believe this at all. Times change, people don’t watch TV in the same way as they did when the show re-launched back in 2005, this move isn’t a big deal.
So, if it’s not a big deal, then why am I posting about the change? It’s simple really, I watch Doctor Who (mostly on catch-up, rarely live) so I’m making people aware of the change from Saturday to Sunday for those that do watch it when it airs.
And now you know – and knowing is half the battle.

Sundays in the U.S. have been a prestige drama evening. I think the Beeb is sending a message about the show.
Of course, part of me that remembers how the move from Saturdays helped slowly drain classic Who is a bit nervous. 🙂

Yeah, there is that worry, but hopefully that isn’t the case this time around and it is just a case of the Beeb no longer worrying about keeping it on Saturday nights. I’ve not watched the show live since the first season of Matt Smith stories, so for me it makes no real difference. To be honest, I’d much prefer it if the BBC put the whole season on iPlayer in one go and then just made a thing of specials (Christmas, Easter etc) which I’d then watch live.

I agree totally and I very really watch it live. I think there’ll come a time when the BBC will have to start putting whole seasons of shows on IPlayer and Dr Who will be one of them. They’ll get left behind if they don’t keep up with the times.

Yep – totally. Maybe this is the start of a rethink for how they approach Who. Or maybe not. Guess we’ll find out soon.
