Warner Bros. Pictures’ Mowgli – an adaptation of The Jungle Book – will not be screening in cinemas.

The movie – directed by Andy Serkis – was supposed to hit cinema screens this October, however, according to Empire, the movie will now move to Netflix. In addition to its switch to the streaming service, the film won’t be released in 2018 but will instead make an appearance in 2019.

Bad news if you were desperate to see Mowgli on the big screen (or see it this year), but perhaps good news in the long run. Mowgli originally entered production around the same time as Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book (2016) and it has kind of been stuck in that movie’s shadow ever since – moving to Netflix should help Mowgli avoid audience apathy.

Commenting on the switch from the cinema to streaming, Serkis, said:

“I’m really excited about Netflix for Mowgli.” He added: “Now, we avoid comparisons to the other movie and it’s a relief not to have the pressure.”
