How did Fred die in Scooby Apocalypse?

After discovering a way to fight the monstrous horde which threatens the lives of Mystery Inc (and every other human left alive on the planet), Fred is slain by a newborn monster. He dies in the arms of his betrothed, Daphne Blake but not before telling her he loves her.
He said: “I just knew… I had to protect you… the way you’ve always protected me.
“‘Cause I love you… Daphne Blake, I love you…
“More than my life.”
*Sniff*
I think you may need those tissues right about now. Pass one this way, will ya?!
