*WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST INCLUDES SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM YET, THEN DO NOT READ THIS POST. SERIOUSLY – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR IS A FILM THAT YOU SHOULD SEE SPOILER-FREE.*

Yesterday I posted a pretty wild theory explaining how I thought Avengers 4 could play out, following the events of Avengers: Infinity War. If you’ve not checked out my post yet, then go do it – there’s this whole theory about why certain characters lived/died etc.

While I still hold high hopes my theory pays off, another theory has now stepped into the ring. Although, I can’t take any credit for this one as it has come via a friend who knows a HECK OF A LOT about comics.

Here’s the theory…

The version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we’ve all been watching, from Iron Man (2008) through to Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and a little beyond, IS NOT the original version of the Marvel Universe – it is just one version. The version we have been watching, which has lead up to the point where Thanos has wiped out half of the universe, is a timeline where things have gone disastrously wrong.

Yep, everything you have seen so far has been a lie. Well, sort of.

The theory goes that at some point during the course of Avengers 4, Captain Marvel will be drafted in to somehow reset the time line. And this may not be the first time it’s happened.

Think back to what we have seen in Avengers: Infinity War – specifically that post credit scene.

During the post credit scene, upon seeing Maria Hill disintegrate, Nick Fury rushed to the back of his car to retrieve a device in order to send out a distress signal to Captain Marvel. Notice how he seemed to know exactly what to do, as though he’d seen this event take place before?

What if he had. What if, this isn’t the first time that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been reset? What if Nick Fury has seen this happen before?

Sounds like a lot to swallow, right? Maybe. Maybe not.

Let’s just consider this for a moment.

A little while back, some set photos from Avengers 4 leaked online, showing core members of the cast (Cap, Thor etc) dressed in their old school uniforms. Many presumed this to mean that Avengers 4 would be dealing with an element of time travel, but who is to say these photos aren’t of a different timeline? THE ORIGINAL TIMELINE.

Now let’s consider this:

Marvel Studios has a pressing problem, post-Avengers 4 – how do they integrate the Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, once Disney takes control of Fox? Surely both of these characters should already exist in the MCU? Especially the idea of mutants existing on the planet.

Well, what if both the FF and the X-Men (and all mutants) did exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a previous timeline? What if we’ve been watching a timeline where they simply got misplaced or erased? What if, during the events of Avengers 4, a new timeline is created in which the FF and the X-Men are restored?

OK, so this sounds crazy. Would Marvel tell us that the last ten years was a lie?

Maybe. Anyone who follows the ongoing Marvel/MCU conversations will know that we’ve been promised big changes post-Avengers 4. We’ve been told that things will be very different to what has come before.

Something to ponder, isn’t it?

And thanks to Russell for coming up with this crazy, yet interesting theory.

Avengers: Infinity War is going to require some serious dissecting.
