A new Star Wars animated series has been announced.
Star Wars Resistance will be set prior to the events of The Force Awakens and will focus on a young pilot on a secret mission to uncover information on the First Order. BB-8 will feature in the new show, along with a bunch of new characters, including lead star, Kazuda Xiono.
According to Star Wars.com, the new “anime-inspired series” is already in production and will premiere on Disney Channel this autumn in the US. The show will be broadcast on Disney XD outside of the US.
Series creator, Dave Filoni, said: “The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots.”
He added: “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
Marc Buhaj, senior vice president, Programming and General Manager, Disney XD, said, “Our colleagues at Lucasfilm have created a compelling narrative for an untold moment in the Star Wars galaxy, and we are excited to partner with them again on this new original series. Star Wars Resistance will bring viewers across generations an engaging story with heart, humour and both new and familiar characters.”
As well as BB-8, when Star Wars Resistance hits screens fans can expect a few well-known faces (and voices to pop up) with Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie already confirmed to be reprising the roles of Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, respectively.
Lucasfilm Animation’s Dave Filoni is overseeing the project, while the voice cast includes Christopher Sean, Suzie McGrath, Scott Lawrence, Myrna Velasco, Josh Brener, Donald Faison, Bobby Moynihan, Jim Rash and Rachel Butera.
